AFP and Customs warn users of Silk Road

In a press release, Wednesday, Australian law enforcement agencies sent a word of warning to those attempting to import illicit drugs into Australia using the online drug marketplace Silk Road. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service warn Australians that user Silk Road and services like it “will not always remain anonymous and when caught, they will be prosecuted.”

Silk Road uses two cryptographic technologies to shield itself from law enforcement scrutiny. The site is only available on Tor, the cryptographic network, which disguises the source and destination of Internet traffic. Payments are only accepted using Bitcoin, a crypto currency whose peer-to-peer design makes it difficult for governments to regulate or monitor.

Google details $12.5 Billion dollar Acquisition of Motorola Mobility

We reported in May on Google closing the purchase of Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion as well as the appointment of Dennis Woodside as CEO.  Later that month Google filed its 2012 SEC conveniently breaking down what the $12.4 billion was for.

Apple offering recent Mac owners free download of Mountain Lion

Well, it is Launch day for Mountain Lion,Good News!; for many of you excited to upgrade you new Apple computer to the new OS,you may not have to fork over the $19.99.  If you have purchased your Mac after June 11th of this year, you are entitled to a free copy of OS X 10.8, as long as you place the request within 30 days.

If you can remember back that far, June 11, was the day of the Keynote address at Apple’s WWDC, where the latest updates were first announced.  So if you are one of the lucky owners of one of those new machines Apple wants to ensure you are utilizing their newest OS.

Iranian nuclear program hacked, made to play AC/DC

While this is not the first time Atomic Emery Organization, the Iranian nuclear energy group, was hacked; this most recent incidence comes with an iconic 90’s rock anthem.

The malicious program shut down some of the facility’s automated processes and played the familiar rock anthem “thunder Struck,” by ACDC.

EU regulators warm up to Google’s antitrust concessions

It appears Google’s antitrust case will not go to trial, after reports from The European Union announced, Tuesday, that they had negotiated a settlement on what may amount to heavy restrictions , imposed transparency, and potentially a $4.0 billion fine.
Google has been under investigation since 2010, after European search companies alleged that Google was altering search results for competing products in the favor of Google, and not disclosing this bias.

While the conditions of the settlement are not yet known, based on the EU Commissioner’s comments earlier this summer; we can assume that Google will be asked to make concessions “in four areas,” or face years of (more…)

“We are currently rolling out a hotfix for a recent bug regarding invulnerable Wizards,” Blizzard said in the wee small hours of the morning. The developer urges players to formally report any exploitable bugs or hacks they may find.

Apple Claiming $2.5 billion in damages in Samsung battle

Both Apple and Samsung have scored partial court victories in Germany Tuesday. While the initial ban of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 has been upheld and extended to the entire European Union. Samsung’s redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 N was ruled sufficiently different to the Apple iPad, making it acceptable under competition law. But this is just one in a series of legal cases causing headaches for both companies and consumers.

The two technology giants are entangled in legal battles over dozens of patent disputes worldwide, struggling for dominance in the lucrative smartphone and tablet computing market. All told, the two companies have filed at least 30 lawsuits against one another. Most recently, Apple is demanding $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung for infringing on its patents, according to Apple’s latest filing in the ongoing patent (more…)

HTC and Samsung Confirm Jelly Bean 4.1 Upgrade

HTC announced earlier this week that three of their devices, the One X, One S, and One X would be receiving the upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.  It has also been reported that the Samsung Galaxy III is slated to receive Android 4.1, which is following their June update of the Galaxy II, to Android 4.0.

Nearly a month has passed since the Google introduced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. With the new OS’s source code being released a couple of weeks back, so it’s only natural for users to expect official Jelly Bean updates to be flowing.

Mahdi ‘Messiah’ malware targeted Israel, Iran PCs

Researchers from cyber security firms Kaspersky Labs and Seculert identified a new type of phishing malware called “Madhi”. Announced Tuesday, the malware is affecting at least 800 computers throughout the Middle East and parts of central Asia.

Mahdi, which in Islam is roughly translates to Messiah has been targeting vulnerable companies, financial institutions, and government agencies, by stealing e-mails, passwords, computer files, and recording nearby conversations.

RIM patent for approved see it in action on the Blackberry 10

Good news for RIM, shortly after a $147 million fine for patent infringement the Blackberry maker has been granted a patent for a predictive text keyboard, which will be featured on its new BB10 operating system.

While predictive text has long been a part of smartphone typing, this would seem to take it a step further. According to a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trade Office, the new keyboard will predict not only what word you’re trying to type, but what word will come next, based on the context, and a database of common expressions.

“The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output,” said U.S. Patent No. 8,224,393. “The device … also provides a learning function that allows the disambiguation function to adapt to provide a customized experience for the user.”
